Earlier in his career, Kent was one of the three equity partners who transformed Hubbard One from a small technology start-up to one of the fastest-growing private companies in North America.  He and his partners sold Hubbard One to Thomson West (now Thomson Reuters) in 2004.  After that, he was appointed chief executive of West Legalworks, West’s premium live education business.

Kent has been a principal and member of advisory boards of a number of technology-focused businesses, including Openmarket Wine (a Web-based wine information company, which he and his partner sold in 2005), Traitspikes (a start-up, co-founded by a McKinsey partner, that increases predictability of law firm hiring), and Fronterion (an outsourcing business focused on the global legal industry).

Before becoming a lawyer, Kent was a television news producer. He is a frequent speaker at law firm retreats, executive committee meetings and legal industry conferences.  He is also frequently quoted in the mainstream and legal media, including in The Wall Street Journal, Businessweek, The National Law Journal and The American Lawyer.  He is a past board member of the Association of Corporate Counsel's Chicago chapter.  During the 100th congress, Kent was appointed by Senator Lowell Weicker, Jr. of Connecticut to be a page in the United States Senate, where he became chief floor page.
