| CASE IN POINT
The chairman of an AmLaw 100 firm
wanted to achieve two specific goals through the annual retreat -- to forge
stronger relationships with a few key clients and to create a mandate for
investing heavily in new technology. To deal with internal opposition to new
technology, we illustrated its importance by having the firm's largest clients
discuss their views on technology. Having a client panel participate in the
retreat concurrently addressed the desire for stronger client relationships. We
also presented a strong financial case for the move to new technology with
pricing scenarios that showed the impact of rapid technology advances on
traditional hourly billing rates.
At the end of the retreat, the executive committee agreed
to focus on technology as a firm development priority.
